Album Review: PTX Presents: Top Pop Vol 1

PTX

Pentatonix, (abbreviated PTX) is an acappella group from Arlington, Texas, consisting of vocalists Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola and Matt Sallee. Their new album, PTX Presents: Top Pop Vol 1, was released April 13th and they will be doing a follow up tour in the summer. It marked their first album with Sallee and without Avi Kaplan.

I know I am going to sound overly critical here, and if you like the album, I truly am sorry.  I do not want to sound like a super fan of Avi, and I am, but I do not want to disregard the other talent here. I love their voices, all of them. Including the new guy, Matt, but I am really not feeling this album.

The first two songs, Attention and Finesse, seemed to be to fast. Attention in particular I felt like the higher register / vocal ranges shined but the lower vocal hid behind a tree.

As far as the third song, it was more about the arrangement of the two songs combined here. It was not bad, I would have like more of “Are you that somebody” or even that song covered as a single itself.

Havana, Perfect, Stay, and Feel It Still were just ok. They were not bad but did not wow me like PTX usually does.

Praying, with such an emotional message, I felt like it was lost here.

I usually love PTX, but this album was a miss.

Your WoW Soundtrack, Part 4: Rocking the Raid Edition!

Thanks to Z & Cinder’s blogging challenge I would like to transition the Music Monday post to a series entitled “Your WoW Soundtrack, Part (whatever part I would be on at the time): (insert special title here) “. I will every so often produce a special musical Monday post that will be at random. You will be able to tell the difference between the post at a glance at the post title. In this post I will be posting about the heavier music I listen to during raid and I know not everyone is into the same musical adventure that I am currently on. That is ok. We are all different and have different things we like. If you enjoy the music, please support the artist in any way you can. Don’t just rip their music from the internet, that is bad kids!

I used Spotify to create the playlist. I am sure this playlist will get longer as I go along!

Rest easy, Avicii. Thank you for all of the music!

The Quickening: Skillet

skilletSkillet has been in my regular listen rotation for a while. A long while.

The band started in 1996, and I have been listening to them since 2007. Right as Comatose, their seventh full-length album was gaining traction. I know they are touring supporting their most recent album entitled Unleashed, but I have been hooked to their Awake & Remixed EP.

I was listening to the Spotify service and the pre-made “Your Daily Mix” playlist they put together and this song popped up. Its actually a very haunting version and it forced me to listen considering how different it is from the original song.

Hope you enjoyed the music today. Also do not forget, if you would like to talk about music with other readers of the blog please feel free to join the discord server!

Your WoW Soundtrack, Part 3: Magnetic!

I have been listening to Flyleaf since they released their debut album. It almost feels like forever. I have always enjoyed their style, even when the band decided to part ways with the original vocalist and to continue on with another. I love both of their voices.

However, we are not here for a full history of the band, but a song that reminds you of something in Warcraft.

Magnetic, one of Flyleaf’s newer songs, actually makes me think of Khadgar, in Dalaran. With the other mages. Also the quest near the big sword in Azeroth’s “face” – when he fly’s away. I just feel like he will make an appearance, in the next expansion, or at least I would hope so!

The following lyric’s specifically make me think of the mighty mage.

“Pulling me from the other side of the world, magnetic.
Filling up the space between the stars, we are magnetic.
Nothing’s gonna come between us now.
Always gonna find each other somehow.
Magnetic, magnetic.
Oh, magnetic, magnetic.”
