Pentatonix, (abbreviated PTX) is an acappella group from Arlington, Texas, consisting of vocalists Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola and Matt Sallee. Their new album, PTX Presents: Top Pop Vol 1, was released April 13th and they will be doing a follow up tour in the summer. It marked their first album with Sallee and without Avi Kaplan.
I know I am going to sound overly critical here, and if you like the album, I truly am sorry. I do not want to sound like a super fan of Avi, and I am, but I do not want to disregard the other talent here. I love their voices, all of them. Including the new guy, Matt, but I am really not feeling this album.
The first two songs, Attention and Finesse, seemed to be to fast. Attention in particular I felt like the higher register / vocal ranges shined but the lower vocal hid behind a tree.
As far as the third song, it was more about the arrangement of the two songs combined here. It was not bad, I would have like more of “Are you that somebody” or even that song covered as a single itself.
Havana, Perfect, Stay, and Feel It Still were just ok. They were not bad but did not wow me like PTX usually does.
Praying, with such an emotional message, I felt like it was lost here.
I usually love PTX, but this album was a miss.
